VISA STEP-BY-STEP
- Obtain your I-20 and with it your travel signature
- Pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee
- Pay the visa fee at HDFC Bank
- Complete the visa application form
- Make a visa interview appointment
- Attend your visa interview
- Wait until your student visa has been approved and your passport has been returned to you
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO MAKE THE STUDENT VISA (Bring these to your interview as well)
- Financial reports and other documents that will support your application
- Providing evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover all tuition fees in the first year
- You must also have access to sufficient finance to cover all your living expenses in the United States
- ALL evidence of finances have to be legalised/authentic [NOT a fotocopy]
- If your finances come from the sponsor, then you must submit:
- Your birth certificate
- The sponsor's most recent original tax form
- The sponsor's bank book or certificate of deposit
- School documents to explain your recent educational background
- School transcripts (original copies) with grades
- Certificates of national examinations (SMA, etc.) or International Examinations (A-Levels, IB, AP, etc)
- English language tests (IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, etc.)
- Diplomas
- Online Non-immigrant Visa Electronic Application, Form DS-160
- A valid passport to travel to the US with a validity period of at least six months from the period of stay in the US (unless there is a specific inter-country agreement providing an exception).
- If there is more than one person listed in one passport, each person must apply for a visa separately.
- One (1) photo measuring 2"x2" (5cmx5cm)
- Receipt showing payment for processing a non-immigrant visa application for a non-refundable amount of $160.00, to be paid in local currency.
- Once the visa has already been issued, there may be an additional fees for issuing a reciprocal visa (visa reciprocity), depending on your nationality.
- For Indonesians, this is $220 → Bring this during your interview [CASH is advisable]
- An approved Form I-20 from UCLA with your committed program.
GENERAL QUESTIONS
- What do we need to enter the country?
- Updated Fall 2022 I-20 (Winter/Spring is invalid) → Note that this is only valid for a year
- Passport
- F-1 Visa Stamp
- Proof of coursework (class schedule printout) is advisable
- Negative PCR Covid-19 Test (taken no more than 3 days before travel) is advisable but no longer required by the CDC
- Please note that some layovers still require the test
- I-91 Fee
- Proof of SEVIS payment
- Will the Sinovac/Sinopharm suffice for vaccine?
- Proof of vaccination IS REQUIRED
- Will quarantine measures be necessary once in LA?
- Not at the moment, but keep updated with specific travel restrictions
- Will we need a social security number, and how do we get it?
- On-campus jobs can grant you access to an SSN
- You need an SSN to get paid legally
